Way back when, The Paradiddler reviewed “Unburying the Beater”, by Matt Ritter. This critically acclaimed instructional DVD was a new and fresh approach to bass drum play, and it is still as relevant today, or even more so, as it was when it was released in 2005.

As thorough as it the DVD is, many still have questions about this technique. So I thought I’d seek out the man himself. I interviewed Mr. Ritter on June 22nd, 2013, and you’ll find out as I did what a wealth of knowledge and experience he’s acquired, with some amazing encounters along the way. In this hour-long interview, you’ll hear about:

  • the best job any drumming intern could ever have
  • how the ‘unburying the beater’ idea came to be
  • a most unlikely student (‘Is this a joke?’)
  • the pedal a bass drum master plays
  • and so much more…

Every drummer, regardless of level of expertise, will learn something from Matt Ritter. Because it’s not just about the bass drum technique, but about the all-around drumming experience, as his over 500 students (and counting) can attest to. And he’s one of the friendliest guys that I’ve spoken to in the industry.
